The House of Representatives committee on justice is set to vote on the impeachment case against Chief Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno next month, committee chair Reynaldo Umali said Wednesday.
"Apat na hearing pa. Whole month of February matatapos kami dito including voting sa committee," Umali said in an interview on radio DZMM.
(We will have 4 more hearings. We'll finish in February including committee voting.)
Officials from the Bureau of Internal Revenue and psychiatrists are expected to attend the succeeding hearings, Umali said.
Sereno's Statement of Assets Liabilities and Net Worth, and her other tax payments will be discussed, he added.
Umali said the committee wants to find out if the chief magistrate is still fit to continue holding the position after several of her colleagues in the Supreme Court testified against her.
"Eight justices na ang tumestigo at lahat may sinasabing hindi sinasabi sa kanya. Even 'yung 4 na miyembro niya sa division niya hindi sang-ayon sa kanya," Umali said.
"How can you lead if you have a divided court? How can the government function if one branch is dysfunctional?"
The House Justice Committee has been tackling Sereno's impeachment case since November 2017 after lawyer Lorenzo Gadon filed an impeachment case against the chief justice for culpable violation of the Constitution, corruption, other high crimes, and betrayal of public trust.
