At least two workers of the Department of Public Works and Highways-Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (DPWH-ARMM) were killed and two others were seriously wounded after armed men attacked their truck in Lamitan, Basilan on Wednesday morning.

Adjahal Dakis was killed on the spot after sustaining multiple gunshot wounds in his body; Abdulbassit Daimon died in the hospital.

Superintendent Christopher Panapan of the Lamitan Police said the victims were on board a truck owned by the DPWH-ARMM when fired upon by at least two armed men along the road of Barangay Baas.

Two other workers identified as Mittoy Estajal and Abdul Sarabin were seriously wounded and immediately brought to a hospital in Zamboanga City.

Panapan said the workers came from Ungkaya Pukan town, an area where DPWH-ARMM has an ongoing project.

They were heading to Lamitan City when the attack happened.

Basilan Governor Jim Saliman said they are looking into extortion as the possible motive of the attack, citing that DPWH-ARMM officials had been receiving extortion letters from an armed group operating in the province.

He said they have yet to establish the identity of the group behind the attack.
