MANILA - An additional 50 policemen were deployed at the busy Baclaran Church in Parañaque City on Wednesday following deadly blasts at a cathedral and mosque in southwestern Mindanao.
The padded police force was tasked with checking the church's perimeter while security guards inspected the bags of parishioners, said Senior Insp. Joseph Dionaldo, supervisor of the operation dubbed "Oplan Buhos sa Baclaran."
A bomb squad, Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) team, and K-9 units are part of the additional deployment, he said.
Hundreds of churchgoers are expected to flock to Baclaran Church on Wednesday for Baclaran Day, the weekly devotion to the Marian icon of Our Mother of Perpetual Help.
Metro Manila police earlier raised a full alert status in the capital region to prevent a spillover of the violence in Jolo, Sulu, where twin explosions rocked a Catholic cathedral on Sunday, leaving 21 dead and some 100 injured.
Past 12 a.m. Wednesday, a grenade blast ripped through a mosque in the southern city of Zamboanga, killing at least 2 people.
