MANILA - Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio has ordered a ban on backpacks in churches and other places of worship in the city following the deadly twin blast in Jolo, Sulu.

“The city mayor has instructed us that churchgoers should no longer bring backpacks in going inside their places of worship for security reasons,” Public Safety and Security Command Center (PSSCC) chief Benito de Leon said in a statement.

Churchgoers are advised to carry small handbags or purses instead.

"In that manner, we could avoid an incident, wherein some malicious individuals could put in explosive devices in backpacks, the same scheme that happened in Jolo,” de Leon added.

The PSSCC urged the public to cooperate during inspection. Members of Davao City Police Office, Task Force Davao, and augmentation teams will man the inspection.

On Sunday, January 27, two bombs exploded at the Lady of Mount Carmel Cathedral in Jolo, Sulu that killed at least 21 people and hurt 80 others.
