MANILA - The archdiocese of Davao has disallowed bringing bags and boxes into churches due to the peace and order situation in the south.
In a letter to parish priests and the religious, Archbishop Romulo Valles said the move was made upon the advice of government security and police personnel.
"Due to the current peace and order situation vis-à-vis threat of violence, please be informed that starting today, for all churchgoers, it is not allowed to bring with you bags, backpacks, knapsacks, boxes, cartons, and the like into the church," a circular from the archdiocese dated January 29 read.
"Only small purses and the like are allowed. Please be guided accordingly," it said.
Mindanao, a portion of which voted for the ratification of the Bangsamoro Organic Law just last week, was recently rocked by two separate bombing incidents in places of worship.
Twin blasts in a Catholic cathedral in Jolo, Sulu last Sunday killed at least 21 people and injured some 100 more. Early Wednesday, a grenade attack on a mosque in Zamboanga City killed 2 and injured 4.
Authorities have not said whether the two incidents are related.
