Police arrested a woman and a policeman in Quezon City who allegedly swindled money from the families of jail inmates detained over non-bailable drug offenses.
Ofelia Balicoco was arrested for allegedly taking 266,000 pesos from the relatives of inmates on promises of downgrading their cases into bailable offenses.
Police also arrested Balicoco's alleged accomplice, PO3 Eliezer Dalisay, who was assigned at the Talipapa police station in Quezon City.
The Quezon City police said Balicoco presented herself as a bondswoman who had contacts in the QCPD and the Quezon City Prosecutor's Office. She allegedly took 100,000 from the relative of one inmate, 61,000 from another and 105,000 from a third in exchange for "fixing" their cases so the inmates could post bail.
But after Balicoco received the money, the families of the inmates never heard from her again. This prompted them to file a complaint before the police.
Balicoco, was arrested in an entrapment operation last Friday. She claimed her contact at the QC Prosecutor's Office was Assistant prosecutor Noel Mingoa, who was killed last January 11 in an ambush.
She also said that she shared the proceeds from the scam to PO3 Dalisay.
Balicoco and Dalisay are facing charges of syndicated estafa.
