1 dead, 2 hurt as Army, leftist rebels clash in North Cotabato

MAGPET, North Cotabato - Army troops clashed with suspected New People's Army forces in this town, leaving one insurgent killed, the military said Monday.

Troops from the Army's 19th Infantry Battalion were deployed to Barangay Bagumbayan on Sunday after they were tipped off on the presence of the NPA, said Col. Ehrlich Noel Paraso, head of the 19th Infantry Battalion.

Some 70 NPA guerillas figures in the 30-minute gun battle, Paraso said. 

The remains of the rebel fatality was recovered from the site. Authorities also recovered several high-powered firearms, ammunition and explosives.

A soldier suffered slight injuries and a wounded NPA member was apprehended in an ambulance passing through a military patrol base.

The military identified the NPA fatality as alias Dindo. The wounded member was identified as Jason Awig also known as Junard Awi or Wengweng, and is the son of the fatality.
