MAGUINDANAO– The military Explosive Ordnance Disposal team detonated a homemade bomb placed by unknown suspects at the side of the national highway in Barangay Awang, Datu Odin Sinsuat, Saturday morning.
The explosive was made out of an 81-mm mortar shell attached to a battery and cellphone used as triggering device.
It was spotted by residents who immediately reported it to authorities.
The EOD team detonated the bomb to avoid casualties among the residents and military troops in the area.
Datu Odin Sinsuat's PNP Chief of Police, Inspector Achmad Alibonga said the motive might be part of diversionary tactics of the Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters (BIFF) to divert the police and military's attention from ongoing operations in Ampatuan against BIFF commanders and armed supporters of Mayor Rasul Sangki.
Motorists were stuck along the Cotabato–General Santos City highway for about an hour, as authorities had barred the way to allow for safe detonation of the explosive.
