CEBU CITY - A police officer and a municipal councilor were arrested after they were caught playing in separate casinos here this week.
PO2 Cyrelle Marie Bayate, 30, was arrested in a casino in Cebu City early Friday by a joint operation of the Philippine National Police (PNP) Regional Intelligence Division (RID) and the Cebu City Intelligence Branch.
An unlicensed caliber .38 revolver with 5 bullets and a motorcycle with no plate number and registration documents were seized from the police officer.
Operatives meanwhile spotted Cordova town Councilor Lemuel Pogoy, 46, playing a slot machine inside a casino in Lapu-Lapu City Thursday evening.
Supt. Josefino Ligan, RID-7 Deputy Chief, said police are intensifying their monitoring of government officials and employees after PNP chief Director General Ronald Dela Rosa warned his men of possible dismissal if caught inside casinos.
Before the policy was implemented, local government officials who were caught playing in casinos were simply asked to leave the gambling establishments, according to Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (PAGCOR) chairperson Andrea Domingo.
In recent months, at least 20 local officials, mostly from the province, were caught playing in casinos, Domingo said.
