PALAWAN - Representatives of Coral World Park met with Coron, Palawan Mayor Jerry Barracoso last January 23 to submit their letter of intent to build a resort and attraction in the island municipality.

Coral World Park, together with Nickelodeon, announced earlier this month that they will build an underwater theme park in the area which they later clarified to be a resort and attraction.

According to Barracoso, it was stated in the letter that the developer will not build any structure underwater but all structures will be built on land.

However, there were no details stated as to where or when the project will take place.

Barracoso said they cannot decide if the project will be approved or not until the developer submitS all the requirements.

According to Palawan Council for Sustainable Development (PCSD), the environmentally critical areas network map of Coron and Busuanga shows there are still enough areas in the island that can be used to build a theme park.

"Mayroon pa namang mga multiple use zones diyan. Titignan lang natin kung saan yung mga sona na iyon at doon lang sila puwedeng magtayo ng ganoong project," Jovic Fabello of PCSD said.

(There are still multiple use zones there that can be used but we have to check where those zones are.)

He added that the developer will be required to submit an environmental impact assessment for the project.

"Kung may mga problema sa social acceptability kailangan ma-satisfy nila iyon. Kailangan magkaroon sila ng endorsement mula sa barangay, sa community, sa lahat ng stakeholders na mai-involve," Fabello added.

Environmental groups both in Palawan and in other parts of the Philippines have previously expressed their opposition for the project.

The Department of Environment and Natural Resources also said it will not approve any project that will destroy the environment.

PCSD has yet to receive any letter of intent or document from Coral World Park or Nickelodeon regarding the proposed theme park.
