BAGUIO CITY -- National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) agents in the Cordillera region arrested on Monday a Taiwanese man accused of abducting his 3-year-old daughter from his estranged girlfriend.
Hung Chang Lai, 40, allegedly snatched his daughter in Angeles, Pampanga last January 16 and brought her all the way to Baguio City.
The 26-year-old mother of the girl told the NBI that it wasn't the first time that such an incident happened with Hung. She claimed that the suspect previously assaulted her and ran off with their daughter.
"Sapilitan niya pong kunin yung bata. Tapos pinagbabalak niya pa pong ilayo sa akin yung bata ko. Pangalawang beses niya na 'tong ginawa sa'kin. Sobrang worse pa nga yung una. Kasi ginapos niya ako sa bahay, kasama yung katulong namin. Parang wala siyang awa. Tapos ngayon naman kinuha niya yung anak ko, wala din ako. Siguro kung andun din ako, malamang, bubugbugin niya na naman ako," she said.
The NBI found the suspect in Barangay Manuel Roxas, Baguio City. Hung voluntarily surrendered and the 3-year-old girl was rescued from his apartment.
Despite being the biological father, Hung will still face a kidnapping case, the NBI said.
"Kidnapping siya in a sense dahil kinuha niya yung anak niya na forcibly taken without the consent of the mother. Illegitimate child and dun sa birth certificate, hindi niya naman rinecognize na anak niya," said Ronald Pangan, special investigator of NBI-CAR.
Hung Chang Lai is now detained at the Baguio City Jail.
