ILIGAN CITY – Roads in a remote barangay of Pugaan got severely eroded after consecutive days of rain.

Water runoff left big holes in most parts of the road, while huge rocks heaved up on others, making it difficult for residents to travel to and from the city center.

One road that led to a primary school was still blocked by landslide debris since Monday last week. Students have had to cross a narrow gap between a dirt pile and a steep cliff to go to school.

A spillway was also damaged and its culvert filled with silt.

On Tuesday, the local government took advantage of fair weather by clearing the tunnels.

However, they still could not mobilize heavy machinery because of bad road conditions.

Barangay chairman Maris Amit said Pugaan had been identified as the recipient of a Tulay ng Pangulo project during the Aquino administration. Amit hopes the project will be realized soon, especially as many of the farmer-residents are also agrarian reform beneficiaries.

Authorities said that another road in barangay Sta. Elena may collapse after a flash flood eroded the soil underneath. A large water pipe was also swept away.

Residents of the barangay, who are mostly survivors of tropical storm Sendong, had been without water for four days.

The water district told ABS-CBN there were 3 busted major water pipes after the flooding, and that they were doubling their efforts to restore water service.
