ILOCOS SUR — Three men were arrested Monday for allegedly selling fake cigarettes inside Cabugao Public Market.
The suspects were identified as Junlee Llanes, Dexter Ballete and Ariel Tindoc.
According to Cabugao Police, police officers who were patrolling the vicinity saw the 3 suspects trying to convince a store owner to buy cigarettes from them.
The police asked them to show their permit to sell but the suspects weren't carrying one.
"Ang mga nagbenta ng sigarilyo, sinita na sila ng mga patroller yung mga naka-police presence diyan, wala silang maipakitang permit . . . permit to sell o authority to sell ng sigarilyo," said Police Senior Inspector Ramil Llarenas.
Representatives of the cigarette companies, who were asked to check the items, told the police that the cigarette packs confiscated from the suspects were fake.
"May mga pumuntang representatives ng Philip Morris at Mighty na sigarilyo . . . pumunta sila, tiningnan nila ang sigarilyo, ini-scrutinized ang mga label at mga packaging sabi nila fake kaya kumuha rin sila ng sample subject for examination ang mga iyan para mapatunayan whether or not fake," Llarenas added.
Confiscated from the suspects were 3 cartons of assorted cigarettes worth about P60,000.
The suspects will be charged with violation of intellectual property rights.
