The ANC Brief: Death toll from new coronavirus rising

Can Philippine authorities prevent the spread of the new coronavirus in the country? Here are the stories making the headlines on ANC today:

Virus spreading
A Chinese man tested positive for the new coronavirus and his family who was traveling with him flew to Manila on Wednesday from Hong Kong. The outbreak of the virus is spreading to Hong Kong, Macau and the US. Meanwhile, Chinese authorities said 440 are infected in China. The death toll also rose to nine. Beijing also warned the virus could be mutating. In the Philippines, 12 persons in Central Visayas are under observation. The boy confined in Cebu City is showing signs of recovery. Meanwhile, a flight attendant is in self-quarantine in Aklan after showing signs of the coronavirus.

Authorities are implementing a stricter lockdown on danger zones around Taal Volcano. The Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) warned that Talisay, Batangas Vice Mayor Charlie Natanauan will to face sanctions if he allows residents to violate the lockdown in his town.

Below targets
Socioeconomic Planning Sec. Enresto Pernia admitted that the 2019 growth likely missed government targets. Economic managers will present the 2019 fourth quarter GDP numbers today. On the corporate front, Chevron said the Batangas land deal with the government complies with Philippine laws, Also, UP is thinking of renegotiating its land deal with the Ayala for the Technohub site.

Visa voided
Sen. Ronald “Bato” dela Rosa confirmed his US visa was voided. Dela Rosa is included in a list of individuals involved in the jailing of Sen. Leila de Lima who are banned from entering the US. A provision on the ban was included in the US 2020 budget. Who else got their US visas cancelled?
