MANILA - One of the animals rescued from Taal's volcano island has died, the Philippine Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) said Thursday.
In a Facebook post, PAWS said Princess suffered from severe respiratory problems and pneumonia.
"Our equine vets tried to treat (her) as best as they could," PAWS said.
According to the animal advocacy group, Princess was one of the 43 animals they rescued after the horse was abandoned on the volcano island after the Jan. 12, 2019 eruption.
"She survived 5 days without food or potable water, and a 50 kilometer boat ride from Taal Volcano Island to Balete(, Batangas)," PAWS said.
PAWS has also appealed for donations of fresh grass to sustain other rescued horses.
Some animals left behind after the eruption were rescued by concerned citizens and groups last week.
Taal Volcano remains under alert level 4, which warns of a “hazardous” eruption in the next hours or days.
