MANILA- Fewer crimes were recorded in 2018 compared to 2017, the Philippine National Police (PNP) reported on Tuesday.
Total crime volume across the country dropped by 9.14 percent to 473, 573 reported crimes from the 520,641 reported crimes in 2017, PNP data showed.
Listed index crimes like murder, homicide, physical injury, rape, robbery, theft, and "carnapping" also saw a drop of 28.14 percent to 77,068 reported crimes from 107,254 in 2017.
Theft cases topped the reported index crimes, with 23,590 cases, followed by physical injury with 21, 498, and robbery with 10,870.
Non-index crimes meanwhile comprised 83.68 percent of the total crime incidents nationwide with 395,859 cases.
Examples of non-index crimes are reckless imprudence resulting in damage to property (152,481 cases), violation of special laws (125,490 cases), and reckless imprudence resulting in homicide (6,291 cases).
Former PNP spokesperson, Chief Supt. Benigno Durana Jr. attributed the decrease in the volume of crimes in 2018 to police efforts like executing crime information reporting and analysis system, and creating a case information database management system.
“Ang capability of the PNP to address crimes ay tumaas because we have given them the motivation and the tools to do their jobs more effectively," said Durana.
“It’s not only logistics but improvement in the system and procedures in recording, investigating and managing these data," he added.
He added that police regional offices managed to lessen their respective crime volumes which contributed to the overall decrease of total crime volume.
Meanwhile, crime volume during the fourth quarter of 2018 (October to December) was also lower by 7.31 percent.
Index crimes during the 4th quarter of 2018 was also significantly lower by 20.66 percent with 18,191 recorded crimes compared to 22,927 of the same quarter in 2017.
Non index crimes showed a significant 14.48-percent increase during the fourth quarter of 2018, however, with 102,300 reports as compared to 89,350 during fourth quarter in 2017.
There were 18,191 index crimes recorded in police blotters nationwide or 15.10 percent of the 120,491 crime incidents recorded during the fourth quarter of 2018.
