MANILA — Senators on Sunday commended their colleague, Filipino ring legend Manny Pacquiao, for his victory against American challenger Adrien Broner.

Pacquiao retained his World Boxing Association world welterweight belt by outpointing Broner in their showdown at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.

In a statement after the fight, Senator Bam Aquino congratulated Pacquiao, adding that the senator-boxer should serve as an inspiration to anyone going through hardships.

"Magsilbi sanang inspirasyon para sa ating mga Pilipino ang panibagong tagumpay na ito ni Sen. Manny para kayanin ang anumang pagsubok sa buhay," Aquino said.

Meanwhile, Senator Nancy Binay said Pacquiao's fight showed why he remains at the heart of Filipinos.

"Sa panibagong laban na ito, ipinakita sa atin ni Sen. Manny Pacquiao kung bakit nananatili siyang bayani sa puso ng mga kababayan natin," she said.

Senator Sonny Angara thanked Pacquiao "for bringing never ending joy and pride" to Filipinos all over the world.

"Once again, you have proven that you are indeed one of the greatest boxers of all time," Angara added.

Senator Joel Villanueva also greeted Pacquiao for what he called Pacquiao's "latest accomplishment in his stellar boxing career."
