MANILA - Senator Alan Peter Cayetano denied Friday that he is leading a plot to oust Senate President Aquilino Pimentel III as alleged by Senator Antonio Trillanes IV in a television interview.
"Si Senator Trillanes lang ang kaisa-isang senador na nagsabi nyan because siya nag-iisip nyan," said Cayetano.
He also dared Trillanes to resign if he cannot help the country.
Cayetano once jockeyed for the Senate leadership in the 17th Congress, but his fellow senators chose Pimentel, the president of the ruling PDP-Laban political party.
The senator is being eyed by President Rodrigo Duterte to become his foreign affairs secretary, replacing Perfecto Yasay Jr. If Cayetano accepts the post, he will have to relinquish his Senate seat.
Cayetano, meanwhile, said some Liberal Party senators should leave the Senate majority.
"My stand from the start is that if they want to support the administration, call a spade a spade. Dapat huwag mamangka sa dalawang ilog," he said.
“Let them help, let them criticize pero huwag ibigay sa kanila ang committees na gagamitin para siraan ang administrasyon.”
Another senator, Richard Gordon, earlier noted that senators from the LP enjoy committee chairmanships despite going against the position of the majority.
"They get chairmanships, meron silang committee, tapos bumabanat (then they criticize the administration)," said Gordon.
