MANILA – President Rodrigo Duterte on Thursday said as fiscal, he dropped all cases against policemen who were sued in the performance of their duty.
Duterte has regarded the police as a vital part of his government, which has made the war on drugs as its top priority.
“I will remind you na when I was a fiscal, lahat ng kaso -- I was the only one tasked for Region 11 to investigate police and military and rebel cases -- lahat ng kaso sa kanila, performance of duty, dropped talaga, automatic dismissed ang kaso,” Duterte said in a speech in Malacañang.
Duterte has earned criticism for his tendency to side with the police, regarded as one of the most corrupt institutions in the Philippines.
“I will protect you. I will provide everything. Just do your work, and follow the law,” Duterte told high-ranking policemen at the presidential palace.
Duterte also drew flak after saying that he believes the story of the cops who killed Albuera, Leyte Mayor Rolando Espinosa Sr. inside a prison cell in Baybay, Leyte.
A legislative inquiry into the mayor’s killing has led several senators to believe that Espinosa’s killing was premeditated.
