DUMAGUETE CITY - City authorities continued to monitor flood-prone areas here as heavy rain persisted until Wednesday.
The Candau-ay spillway in Dumaguete overflowed Wednesday morning.
However, water did not reach the 8-foot critical level, and it subsided after an hour.
The Dumaguete Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office assured the public that it was continuing its 24-hour monitoring of weather and flood conditions.
Officials said life vests and rubber boats were always on standby.
Meanwhile, parents of students in West City Elementary School, one of the biggest public schools in Dumaguete, fetched their children for fear of leaving them stranded due to flood water.
School Principal Barsilita Patrimonio allowed students to be brought home, but asked parents to use time spent at home for studying.
If good weather prevails, school operations in Dumaguete City will resume Thursday.
