MANILA—The Judicial and Bar Council (JBC) on Friday opened applications and nominations for the positions of Supreme Court Associate Justice and Court of Appeals Presiding Justice.

SC Associate Justice Andres Reyes is set to retire on May 2020 while CA Presiding Justice Romeo Barza vacated his post in August 2019.

Supreme Court Clerk of Court Edgardo Aricheta, also JBC's ex officio secretary, said in an announcement that those interested must submit their application or nomination until Jan. 31.

Reyes was appointed to the high court by President Rodrigo Duterte in July 2017. He joined the judiciary in 1987 as trial court judge, later on moving to the CA before joining the SC.

Barza, on the other hand, was appointed head of the appellate court in Dec. 2017. He started as a trial court judge in 1995 and was appointed Associate Justice of the CA in 2006.

When the application and nomination closes, the JBC will interview the aspirants to determine who will make a shortlist of nominees to be submitted to the President.

The JBC is constitutionally mandated to screen and vet nominees to the judiciary.
