MANILA (UPDATE)- Manila Archbishop Luis Antonio Cardinal Tagle on Friday called on the Catholic faithful to always put God in their hearts and be mindful of Him amid the world's present temptations of wealth and power.

This, as Tagle offered his last mass at the Archdiocesan Shrine of Santo Niño in Tondo, Manila before he departs for the Vatican City to take up a new post in the Holy Office.

Tagle said the kingship of Christ is not based on the kingdoms of the world, but is based on openness and mercy. Using the Child Jesus as an example, Tagle said Christ is open to the Father and to the lowly and whose reign is marked by holiness, life and forgiveness of sins.

Tagle also urged others to pray for those who were affected by the Taal Volcano eruption.

ON LEAVING FOR THE VATICAN

After the Mass, parishioners of the Sto. Nino Shrine gave a tribute to Tagle through dance, song and a Sto. Niño image gift, before the Cardinal leaves for Rome to take up his position as the new prefect of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples, the Vatican department responsible for the spread of the Catholic faith throughout the world through its missionary works and related activities.

Pope Francis appointed Tagle to the position in December 2019.

Tagle was not able to hold his tears when he gave his blessing to the Tondo faithful.

He admitted he was in a "hard" dilemma since his future was not clear. He also asked the Catholic faithful to pray for him, the Holy Father and the Catholic Church.

Tagle's new position, also called the “Red Pope”, is equivalent to that of the Cabinet secretary to the Roman Pontiff. - with reports from Willard Cheng, ABS-CBN News
