MANILA - For opposition Senator Antonio Trillanes IV, mediating between the Catholic Church and President Rodrigo Duterte would just be a futile attempt.
Trillanes also said the President is "beyond salvation," as he insults not only the bishops, but even Jesus Christ.
"Di ba ilang beses na nilang sinubukan, talagang satanista itong si Duterte, wala nang magagawa doon. Nakita niyo naman, pati si Jesus ininsulto na...Wala na magagawa diyan, beyond salvation na 'yan, kumbaga sinusunog na ang kaluluwa niyan," Trillanes told reporters when asked about the matter.
(They have tried that several times, but Duterte is really satanic, we cannot do anything about that. He even insults Jesus, he is beyond salvation, his soul is already burning.)
Trillanes wished Senate President Vicente Sotto III "good luck" when informed that the latter was working out a possible meeting between the two camps.
Malacañang on Thursday urged Catholic bishops not to meddle in the affairs of the state, as more prelates have come out to condemn Duterte’s violent rhetoric towards the clergy.
Tense exchanges between Duterte and some prelates have continued despite a July 2018 meeting between the President and his fellow Davaoeño, Archbishop Romulo Valles, president of the Catholic Bishops' Conference of the Philippines.
Presidential Spokesperson Salvador Panelo said the President remains open to talks with the Church hierarchy, after Sotto said he was willing to mediate between the two sides.
