MANILA - Novaliches Bishop Emeritus Teodoro Bacani said people should not listen to President Rodrigo Duterte when he talks about religion, because he is no expert.
"I don't think he is better than any grade 6 Ateneo graduate when it comes to religion. For him to speak about the doctrine of the Trinity and to call it silly, which Christianity has upheld from its very beginning, eh pagkatapos eh sasabihin niya it is silly? He's a silly man if he is to say that. He would be stupid to say that. That is wrong and to say that is an insult," said Bacani in an interview over radio DZMM.
The retired bishop was reacting to one of Duterte's controversial remarks about the Catholic Church, especially the Christian belief on the Holy Trinity.
According to Bacani, it was silly of Duterte to question the doctrine of the Trinity.
"Sigurado ko, lahat ng mga obispo, kahit hindi naman ako spokesman, halimbawa, obispo, eh laban doon sa pagsasabi niyang stupid itong mga Katoliko. 'Yung doctrine of the Trinity is silly. Para bang 'yung isang kindergarten na walang kaalaman, eh si President Duterte po eh ignorante 'yan sa Catholic religion, pardon me to say this," Bacani told DZMM Teleradyo.
Bacani said Duterte was not worth listening to.
"This man is not worth listening to when it comes to religion because he has no expertise. He is not a religious man at all," Bacani said.
Duterte earlier said "tambays" or bystanders should kill or steal from “rich” bishops, stepping up his rhetoric against Catholic Church leaders.
Bacani responded by challenging Duterte to a "friendly challenge," daring him to roam the streets without security escorts just like what bishops do.
Last December, the President also said bishops are useless and they are better off dead.
