MANILA - Philippine officials on Wednesday turned over to Chinese authorities a former government official who hid in the Philippines for a year to evade prosecution for corruption charges and economic crimes.
Beijing, which cracked down on government abuses last year, coordinated with Manila's anti-corruption body and immigration bureau to track down the 49-year-old suspect, Xie Haojie.
Xie was arrested in his condominium unit in Pasay last Sunday, the Bureau of Immigration said in a statement.
The suspect will be deported to China and will be blacklisted from entering the Philippines again, said BI Commissioner James Morente.
"We will not tolerate the presence of undesirable aliens using the Philippines as a hideout. Fugitives will be sent back to face their crimes, he said.
Manila and Beijing "will continue to strengthen our cooperation in going after Chinese fugitives", he added.
