MANILA - The House justice committee will invite the psychiatrists who supposedly flunked Supreme Court Chief Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno's mental evaluation to the impeachment hearing.
Oriental Mindoro Rep. Rey Umali, chair of the committee, said Monday that contracts of these psychiatrists were allegedly not renewed upon the assumption of the Chief Justice.
"The impeachment committee, likewise, intends to invite the psychiatrists who gave failing marks on the psychiatric or psychological make-up of the Chief Justice, and who were allegedly 'fired' or whose contracts were not renewed upon the assumption of the Chief Justice," he said to open their first meeting in 2018.
Lawyer Carlo Cruz, spokesperson of Sereno, said they believe this matter is immaterial to the impeachment hearing but clarified they are not against these psychiatrists testifying.
He warned that delving into this issue will just "open a can of worms" as other high-ranking public officials may also be subjected to such questions.
"This is a can of worms. If they open this up, this can lead to similar questions pertaining to the psychiatric competence of many other high-ranking officials in government," he told ANC Monday.
