MANILA -- Tourist arrivals in the Philippine have spiked two weeks before the country hosts the coronation night of the prestigious Miss Universe pageant, the Department of Tourism confirmed Sunday.
"We're getting a lot of tourist arrivals... Tumaas talaga siya, especially for Cebu," DOT Undersecretary Kat de Catro said in a DZMM interview.
"A lot of their flights are fully booked for Tuesday kasi doon magaganap ang swimsuit presentation."
(We're getting a lot of tourist arrivals. It really increased, especially in Cebu. A lot of flights to the province are already booked for Tuesday because the swimsuit presentation will be held there.)
Tourism officials, she added, have observed an increase in accommodation inquiries from tourists who want to witness the 63-year beauty contest.
"Initial announcement pa lang ng Miss Universe, marami na kaming nakuhang inquiries sa Department of Tourism in terms of saan ba silang mga hotels dapat mag-book," she said.
(Ever since the initial announcement of Miss Universe that the Philippines will host the pageant, the Department of Tourism has received a lot of inquiries on the local hotels where tourists could stay.)
De Castro said the pageant, which is set to highlight Philippine tourist destinations, is also expected to gain media mileage as hundreds of journalists from all over the world are expected to cover the event.
