Gasoline boy hurt in North Cotabato blast

A loud explosion rocked a gasoline station in Pikit, North Cotabato on Thursday.

NORTH COTABATO- A loud explosion shook a gasoline station in Pikit town, North Cotabato on Thursday morning.

A gasoline boy who requested not to be named said he was on top of an oil tanker when two men on a motorcycle passed near the gas station's office and shouted "Happy New Year."

A few seconds later, a loud explosion was heard.

The suspects were wearing face masks and immediately fled after the incident.

A gasoline boy identified as Jay Salac was wounded in the explosion.

The explosion also damaged part of the gasoline station's office.

The office was also damaged by shrapnel.

Police said based on their investigation, the explosion was caused by a hand grenade.

The gasoline station owner is puzzled on the motive of the attackers, saying they have not received any threat.

Pikit PNP chief inspector Donald Cabigas said extortion could be the reason behind the blast.

The explosion took place amid the heightened security in the area following the attack in the North Cotabato District Jail wherein more than 100 inmates escaped.
