SALUG, Zamboanga del Norte—A passenger bus was burned down by suspected members of the New People’s Army (NPA) in Barangay Pucay in this town Tuesday night.

According to reports from the Police Regional Office, the driver, Deonilo Bucan, and three others were on their way to Salug to deliver provisions when they were flagged down by 5 armed men who introduced themselves as NPA members operating in the area.

Bucan said the bus was carrying sardines, rice and gasoline for supply in neighboring towns. Those on the bus overheard the armed men talking about how they were always “passing without paying” in the area.

One of the suspects doused the bus with gasoline before lighting it up. A gunshot was also fired by one of the perpetrators before the alleged rebels fled the scene.

Bucan and his companions were unharmed.

Authorities are still investigating the incident. Damage to the vehicle and the supplies cost an estimated P420,000.
