Supreme Court Associate Justice Antonio Carpio might not attend the resumption of the justice committee impeachment hearing against Chief Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno next week, a lawmaker said Thursday.
Carpio, the most senior magistrate of the high court, said in a letter to congressmen that he cannot testify on the accusations against Sereno based on personal knowledge, House justice committee chairperson Reynaldo Umali told DZMM.
Umali said his committee was still studying their next step over this development.
Carpio and Sereno had approved a special committee that allegedly delayed the survivorship benefits to widows of retired judges and justices -- an accusation cited in the impeachment complaint against the Chief Justice.
Sereno is also accused of having an extravagant lifestyle and bypassing her colleagues in the issuance of orders.
Supreme Court Justices Diosdado Peralta and Lucas Bersamin are are expected to testify at the resumption of the impeachment proceedings against Sereno on Monday, said Umali.
