MANILA - President Rodrigo Duterte on Thursday said in jest that it might be better to just kill “5-6” lenders in order to end the “perpetual bondage” of poor Filipinos.
Duterte has on several occasions raised concerns about the high-interest loan system, usually offered by Indian nationals residing in the country.
In a speech in Bulacan, Duterte said he wants an end to “5-6” and this may be done by killing those who perpetuate the system.
“Kaya alam ko ‘yang 5-6. Iyan ang gusto kong patayin na sistema. Kung hindi ko mapatay ang sistema, ‘yung nagdadala ng 5-6 na lang ang ating patayin,” he said.
“I’m not trying to derogate the nation or the tribe. But itong mga 5-6 kasi sa Davao magpautang. Pagkatapos ‘pag mag-utang ka ng pera, pautangin ka pa ng kama, TV set. So dagdagan nila so you are in perpetual bondage.”
In an attempt to end the loan scheme, the government has established the Pondo sa Pagbabago at Pag-asenso, which offers loans with 2.5 percent monthly interest.
Duterte made this remark in front of teachers who attended the groundbreaking of a school in Bulacan. The Department of Education had earlier raised concerns over the mounting debt of teachers.
