MANILA- Cotabato City may be placed under the control of the Commission on Elections (Comelec) following a bombing outside a mall there.

Comelec Chairman Sheriff Abas said aside from the bombing, an assessment by election officers highlights problems in security, and peace and order in Cotabato City.

At least 2 people died while several others were injured in the New Year's eve blast at a department store in Cotabato City last Dec. 31, 2018.

If placed under the poll body's control, a task force will lead the implementation of security measures in the city, Abas said.

"Security-wise, it will be headed by a task force, by a committee in charge," he said.

"The security deployment of troops, kung kailangan ireshuffle ang mga tao doon, irereshuffle nila," he added.

It can be recalled that the town of Daraga in Albay was also recommended to be placed under the poll body's control after a lawmaker was shot dead.

The Comelec had earlier set Jan. 13 as the start of the election period.
