8 dead in suspected pirate attack off Zamboanga

MANILA - Eight crew members of a fishing vessel were shot dead after suspected pirates attacked them in waters off Siromon Island in Zamboanga City.

According to the Zamboanga City Police, Sangali Barangay Chairman Daud Bakil and Kervin Banahan appeared before them on Tuesday morning to report the incident.

They said that about 8 p.m. on Monday, the M/B Hulbot Hulbot was strafed by five armed men in waters off the vicinity of Siromon Island, Eleven Island Group in Zamboanga City.

As a result, eight crew members were killed on the spot while the others dived into the waters and swam to safety.

The Philippine Coast Guard has rescued crew members Norman Sakandal and Ervin Banaan.

Authorities are still searching for the five missing companions, said PCG spokesperson Commander Armando Balilo.
