A couple was beheaded by suspected members of the Abu Sayyaf in the remote village of Sumisip, Basilan on Thursday.

Senior Inspector Ian Sanchez, chief of the Sumisip Police, said the remains were found by Ibrahim Wahab, a member of the Special Civilian Active Auxiliary (SCAA), late Thursday afternoon.

He said Wahab heard at least 5 gunshots coming from the northwest of Barangay Mahatalang. When he tracked it down, it led him to the severed head and body of a woman in Sitio Daingan.

Two hours later, another severed head and body was found in same area near the Ismael Elementary School.

Local authorities later confirmed that the remains were those of the Kutih couple from Isabela City, Basilan.

Basilan Governor Jim Salimman said he received information from a reliable source that the slain husband, identified as Abdurahim, was a brother of an Abu Sayyaf member.

It remains unclear why the bandits would target a kin of their member.

Salimman claimed that the group of Abu Sayyaf sub-commander Radzmil Jannatul was behind the beheading.

He said the area was a known stronghold of the Abu Sayyaf.

This is also where the bandits razed to the ground an abandoned public school almost two months ago.
