MANILA - Self-confessed illegal drug distributor Kerwin Espinosa is now under full coverage of the Department of Justice's Witness Protection Program (WPP).
Justice Secretary Vitaliano Aguirre II confirmed that Espinosa, son of slain Albuera, Leyte Mayor Rolando Espinosa, was admitted into the WPP before Christmas.
Aguirre said there was no longer any obstacle in Espinosa's application with the WPP after his physical custody was transferred to the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI), an attached agency of the justice department.
Espinosa's WPP coverage is in connection with his testimony that former Justice Secretary and now Senator Leila De Lima served as one of his protectors, and received P8-million in drug money from him.
Espinosa was charged before the DOJ, along with De Lima and her former driver-bodyguard and former lover Ronnie Dayan, in a drug-related complaint filed by the NBI. Aguirre said the DOJ will move for his discharge as state witness should the case reach the courts.
