MANILA- Google honored Filipino author and educator Genoveva Matute on Friday with a doodle in celebration of her 105th birthday.
Matute is known for "Kuwento ni Mabuti," the first short story in Filipino to win the Palanca Award when the literary awards were first held in 1951.
A graduate of the then Philippine Normal College and the University of Santo Tomas, Matute taught students for 46 years and even became dean of the Filipino Department of PNC.
In 1992, Matute also won the Gawad CCP Para sa Sining.
Throughout her academic career, Matute wrote several short stories such as “Leave-taking” and “Land of the Bitter,” which were published in national magazines.
She passed away in 2009 at the age of 92.
