MANILA - A bill that will place a lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) help and protection desks in all police stations nationwide has been approved by the House Committee on Public Order and Safety.
Under House Bill 2952, "the proposed LGBT desks shall act on all cases involving crimes against chastity, and sexual harassment committed against LGBTs", the bill's author Rep. Vilma Santos-Recto said.
Once ratified into law, the measure is also expected to "ensure the gender neutrality" of all Philippine National Police (PNP) personnel by making "gender neutrality" a part of the criteria for recruitment, selection, promotion, and deployment of cops.
“Ultimately, this bill seeks to create a police organization that is able and eager to respond to any criminal or emergency incident, regardless of the gender orientation of the people involved,” said Santos-Recto.
The committee has yet to announce when the legislation will be scheduled for plenary debates.
