MANILA (UPDATED) - A strong quake struck under the Sulu Sea Monday afternoon, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said.
Phivolcs first measured the quake at magnitude 6.5, before later revising it to magnitude 6.1.
The undersea quake, which occurred at a depth of 31 kilometers, struck 200 km northwest of the Zamboanga City at around 5:29 p.m.
It was felt with the following intensities:
- Intensity IV - Zamboanga City
- Intensity II - Dumaguete City and Bayawan City, Negros Oriental; Iloilo City; Oroquieta City, Misamis Occidental; Dipolog City, Zamboanga del Norte
- Intensity I - Busay, Cebu; La Carlota City, Negros Occidental; Lugait, Negros Oriental
Phivolcs Director Renato Solidum told dzMM that the quake is considered "moderately strong."
He said aftershocks should be expected.
