MANILA -- Twenty out of 98 barangays have already finished canvassing votes a day after the special barangay elections held in Zamboanga on Monday.

According to a report from the Philippine National Police, 20 out of 98 barangays have already proclaimed winning candidates from 8:00 in the evening Monday until 3:00 early morning Tuesday.

However, some precincts are still unable to proclaim winners due to protests from supporters.

In Barangay Lunzuran, supporters of Efren Perez, one of four candidates for barangay chairman, rushed to the Lunzuran Elementary School to ask officials to stop the counting of votes.

The supporters believe that there were anomalies in the canvassing of votes involving Board of Election tellers.

Perez has filed a formal complaint to the Commission on Elections (Comelec).

Meanwhile, teachers in Lunzuran Elementary School have transferred the ballot boxes and continued the canvassing in the city coliseum to avoid any interruption. -- with reports from Leizel Lacastesantos, TV Patrol Chavacano
