MANILA (UPDATE) – An alleged member of hacker group "Anonymous Philippines" was arrested in Butuan City, Agusan del Norte.
The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) said the suspect, identified as Rodel Plasabas, was arrested in an Internet shop in the city where the Internet Protocol (IP) address of one of the hackers was traced.
Victor Lorenzo, NBI Cybercrime Division executive officer, said Plasabas was involved in the hacking of government websites in 2011 and recently when the issue on the pork barrel scam made the news.
Lorenzo said Plasabas uses the nicknames "Anon Reaper," "Anonymous Butuan" and "Reaper."
"Initially nang nag-conduct ng scanning, nakita natin may mga communication devices, may mga evidence na na-gather. We are going to document it. I-pe-present namin for inquest proceedings bukas si Rodel," Lorenzo said.
In a text message sent to reporters on Thursday, Justice Secretary Leila de Lima said Plasabas was online when the search warrant was issued.
"Initial check on his current chats indicated discussions on website hacks. Initial forensics were conducted. Subject will be presented for inquest today before the Butuan City Prosecutors' Office," de Lima said.
Plasabas' girlfriend, who refused to be named, said the suspect is taking up an IT course.
The NBI said Plasabas faces charges for violating Republic Act 8792 or the Electronic Commerce Act of 2000. – reports from Richmond Hinayon, ABS-CBN News Caraga; and Ina Reformina, ABS-CBN News
