One year after Yolanda, many remember the thousands killed and injured by Yolanda, the most devastating typhoon to hit land. Glossed over are the orphaned children who are now the most vulnerable among the survivors.

With as many as 7,000 people dead, many children were orphaned. They have become vulnerable to malnutrition and other threats, including trafficking via illegal adoptions or sexual exploitation.

Horrible as this prospect is, it is a reality in times of natural disasters.

The United Nations (UN) reports that at least 14 million people, including 1.2 million children, have been affected by Yolanda in the Visayas region.

In Leyte and Samar alone, where majority of the 7,000 casualties were recorded, the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) says 66 children lost one or both parents in the disaster — and they’re still struggling to cope with what happened that day.

This photo essay deals with the life of "Yolanda's orphans" a year after the super typhoon struck several parts of Eastern Visayas. This piece also seeks to show that children bear the brunt of calamities.
