MANILA, Philippines – Over 500 inmates in Compostela Valley held a noise barrage and hunger strike over the slow resolution of their cases.

Jail warden Melvin Coquilla said almost all of the 563 inmates in Compostela Valley Provincial Rehabilitation Center, which is based in Tagum City, Davao del Norte, have been conducting a noise barrage thrice a day since last week.

The inmates also ended their 8-day hunger strike Sunday.

Media members were banned from entering from the premises of the jail, leading some inmates to go to the roof while conducting the noise barrage.

The noise barrage and hunger strike were the inmates’ response to the slow resolution of their cases.

The inmates were demanding that an additional court handle their cases. Currently, only branch 3 of the Compostela Valley Regional Trial Court (RTC) handles the cases of the inmates.

The inmates also wanted to meet Compostela Valley Governor Arturo Uy, and Representatives Maricar Zamora Apsay (1st District) and Rommel Amatong (2nd District) to air their grievances. – Report from Vina Araneta, ABS-CBN News Southern Mindanao
