MANILA, Philippines - A member of the Citizen Armed Force Geographical Unit (CAFGU) went amok in a military detachment in Ipil town, Zamboanga Sibugay Sunday evening, shooting 6 of his comrades before he was killed.

Maj. Gen. Romeo Lustestica, commander of the Army’s 1st Infantry Division, said militiaman Olegario Vocal Jr. shot dead Narciso Rudas, Nilo Rudas, Ike Hario, Edgar Sibelo and Salvador Belono, using his issued M14 rifle. The incident occurred at the Palid detachment around 7 p.m.

After the shooting, Vocal fled about 600 meters away from the detachment where he was pursued by elements of the 18th Infantry Battalion.  Lustestica said Vocal opened fire at the pursuing troops, killing another militiaman, Elmer Taberos, before he himself was killed.

“Pursuing elements were forced to fire back, thereby fatally hitting suspect,” Lustetica said.

He said an investigation is underway to know what caused the incident.
