BUTUAN CITY - Loreto, Agusan del Sur Mayor Dario Otaza and his son were found shot dead in Butuan City a day after they were abducted on Monday by unidentified armed men in their home.

Lt. Col. Rey Pasco, 4th ID Support Division Company executive director, said the bodies of the two victims were found in a coconut plantation in Purok Dos, Barangay Bitan-agan Tuesday morning.

Earlier reports said the two were abducted by 18 armed men inside their home in Barangay Riverside.

Authorities said the mayor was bound before he was shot.

Relatives are blaming the Communist Party of the Philippines-New People's Army for the killing, saying the mayor - a former NPA rebel - had been campaigning against the communist insurgency.

Last May, 150 NPA rebels gave up armed struggle during a peace caravan in Loreto.

The mayor had recently filed his certificate of candidacy for reelection in next year's polls. With report from Richmond Hinayon, ABS-CBN News Caraga
