2 soldiers, 1 rebel hurt in Agusan clash

MANILA, Philippines – Two government soldiers and a communist rebel were injured in a firefight between the military and suspected New People’s Army (NPA) rebels in Agusan del Sur on Tuesday afternoon.

Members of the 75th Infantry Battalion had an encounter with rebels from the Guerilla Front 20 of the communist group at around 4:30 p.m. in Barangay New Visayas in Trento town.

The military recovered a M16 rifle, a Garand rifle and an improvised explosive device (IED) from the rebels.

Meanwhile in the adjacent province of Surigao del Sur, some 15 members of Guerilla Front 19-B led by “Mitchie” attacked the patrol base of the 29th Infantry Battalion in Barangay Mahaba in Marihatag town at around 4:45 a.m.

No one was reported hurt in the firefight, which lasted for about 30 minutes. – Report from Trini Velasco, ABS-CBN News Caraga
