MANILA, Philippines (UPDATED) – Five members of a family were killed by their neighbor in Laguna province on Wednesday night, police said.

The suspect, 19-year-old Ernie Tambuong, claimed that he killed the victims because they accused him of being behind the death of the family's horse.

San Pablo City police Chief Supt. Ferdinand De Castro said Tambuong hacked to death Bay Rendon, 40; Maricel Rendon, 24; and minors JM, 7; Jomari, 5; and Maryjoy, 2 months old.

The incident happened around 11:30 p.m. while the family was fast asleep inside their home in Purok 1, Barangay Sta. Felomina.

All 5 died on the spot, while another family member, 8-year-old Margie, survived and was rushed to a hospital for treatment.

Margie, who sustained hack wound in her left chest, positively identified Tambuong as the attacker.

"Lagi kasi nila akong pinagbibintangang pumatay ng alaga nilang kabayo kaya ko nagawang patayin sila," said the suspect, who has been arrested.

According to police, the victims were fast asleep inside their home around 11:30 p.m. when the suspect, who was armed with a sickle, suddenly barged in and attacked the family.

De Castro in a telephone interview with ABS-CBN News said prior to the incident, Bay Rendon and Tambuong had a drinking session near the victims' house and a heated argument between the two ensued.
Rendon allegedly threatened him for the death of his horse and asked him to leave San Pablo City.

Tambuong is a native of Bicol and works in San Pablo.

He is now detained at the San Pablo police station and will face charges of multiple murder and frustrated murder. – Reports from Arnell Ozaeta, ABS-CBN Southern Tagalog; and Ronilo Dagos, dzMM
