MANILA, Philippines – A member of the Revolutionary Proletarian Army-Alex Boncayao Brigade (RPA-ABB) was killed in an ambush in the vicinity of Barangay Bad-As, San Joaquin, Iloilo and the towns of Sibalom and Hamtic in Antique Thursday morning.

The fatality was identified as Alfredo Sidlao Jr. alias “Kumander Onyok”.

Sidlao’s two companions, Pablito Sibonga and Ben Gonzales, were wounded in the attack.

They were brought to a nearby hospital and are now in stable condition.

Sidlao’s family has confirmed that Alfredo had been active in the organization since 1993 because, according to them, he sought to bring peace in the barangay.

Authorities said Sidlao, along with other RPA-ABB members, were patrolling in the area when at least 15 rebels under the Southern Front Committee of the Communist Party of the Philippines-New People's Army opened fire at them.

RPA-ABB members were able to return fire, resulting to the alleged deaths of two rebels.

However, the bodies of the rebels were not recovered from the ambush site.

Based on the record of the Philippine National Police, the ambush site is considered as an area of operation of RPA-ABB under the leadership of a certain Joven Tababa.

The rebels, on the other hand, are believed to be influential in the neighboring barangay. -- Report from Nony Basco, ABS-CBN News Iloilo
