MANILA, Philippines – Floodwaters in Maguindanao continue to rise, particularly in 2 municipalities.

“Ang observation namin sa eastern south ng Maguindanao, particularly dito sa municipality ng Datu Montawal at Pagalungan, tumataas pa ‘yung tubig,” Maguindanao Provincial Administrator Abdul Wahab Tungga told ANC’s “Top Story” on Friday.

Tungga said some 34, 491 families in 8 municipalities were displaced by the floods brought about by incessant rains.

He said the families are mostly from Mother Kabuntalan, Pandag, Sultan sa Barongis, Datu Montawal, Paglat, Pagalungan, Buluan and Mangudadatu.

However, Tungga said 8 more municipalities in the province were also affected by the floods.

Apart from the continuous downpour, lack of water passage due to water hyacinths in Buluan River and Buluan Lake contributed to the floods.

“Kasama na ‘yung umuulan at ‘yung tubig natin sa may daluyan malapit sa Cotabato City ay nabara ng water hyacinth doon sa Delta Bridge at sa Taviran Bridge sa Mother Kabuntalan,” said Tungga.

The social welfare department has been conducting relief distribution operations in the affected areas.

Due to the large number of displaced families, Tungga said evacuation centers cannot accommodate them.

Instead, the families temporarily camped at the side of a highway, which Tungga said is the only area not submerged in floods.

No casualties were reported.
