MANILA, Philippines – A police officer escorting Labangan, Zamboanga del Sur Vice Mayor Ukol Talumpa was hurt after an unidentified suspect hurled a grenade at Talumpa’s vehicle on Wednesday.
Authorities said the grenade exploded near Talumpa’s vehicle while it was parked outside a recruitment agency in San Pedro St., Pagadian City.
Talumpa was inside the vehicle with his wife and another relative when the explosion occurred.
PO1 Mohamad Mangumpara, who was still outside of the vehicle, was the only one hurt in the blast.
Mangumpara was the only witness to the suspect behind the attack.
Talumpa, meanwhile, said the incident was not the first attempt on his life.
He was also ambushed in Ermita, Manila last 2010.
Talumpa suspects that the incident was politically motivated because he has plans to run as mayor against incumbent Mayor Wilson Nandang. -- Report from Roxanne Arevalo, ABS-CBN News Iligan
