ZAMBOANGA (2ND UPDATE) - A young girl was killed while several others were injured in an explosion at a bus terminal in a public market in Tomas Claudio Street, Zamboanga City Friday afternoon.

The body of 11-year-old Embraida Alipara was found inside the wrecked bus. Thirty-four others were injured.

Sources from the Philippine National Police (PNP) said the bus, which came from Barangay Labuan, had just arrived at the terminal when an unidentified passenger left a plastic bag inside the bus' trash bin.

Suspecting something, the bus conductor took the plastic to move it to another area. This prompted the explosion.

In an interview on ANC, Sr. Supt. Angelito Casimiro, director of Zamboanga City Police Office, said the explosion was caused by an improvised explosive device (IED).

He added that the management of the bus company received threats after a similar explosion in Lamitan, Basilan earlier in the week.

D'Biel Transport Company has trips in Lamitan, Basilan and other parts of Zamboanga.

Casimiro encouraged bus companies to inform the police of any threats.

"In the east coast bus route, there are bus marshalls provided by government. We have been engaging the different transportation companies that if ever they receive threats or extortion, they should inform government forces so security forces can take precautionary measures. But in this case, they failed to inform us," he said.

Casimiro also encouraged bus companies to implement their own security measures, as well as use an integrated terminal.

CCTV FOOTAGE

Authorities have a copy of the closed-circuit television (CCTV) camera footage in the area, which shows the person possibly involved in the incident.

The footage shows a man wearing a dark shirt and carrying a white bag entering the bus minutes before the explosion.

The video, however, failed to show the actual explosion.

The local government of Zamboanga has also offered a P200,000 reward for information on the people responsible for the said explosion. -- with a report from Jewel Reyes and Noning Antonio, ABS-CBN News Zamboanga
